Get on Your Bike for Charity Posted On 10 September 2021

A local mental health charity is encouraging people to attend their cycle event this week, in order to raise the awareness of mental health in the community

The 11-mile bike ride will take place on Friday 10th September, and is being organised by the charity, Rethink Mental Illness, in partnership with sustainable transport charity, Sustrans.

Rethink Mental Illness was created nearly 50 years ago by a group of people who were caring for someone who was suffering from schizophrenia. And ever since, its network of helpers has expanded, and now the charity improves the lives of thousands of people, through its services, successful campaigning, and expert information.

And one of the aforementioned services is this cycle event. Sustrans, who have co-organised the event, are the custodians of the National Cycle Network, which is  a UK-wide network of traffic-free paths for everyone, connecting cities, towns and countryside. Their aim, through events like this, is to bring people together in places with clean air and green spaces.

When speaking about the initiative, Jonathan Clack from Rethink, admitted that the impact from the past eighteen months is a major reason behind events such as this. He said, ‘The last year has shown the need people have to connect with each other, the outdoors and the intrinsic link between mental and physical health’.

He added, ‘Cycling has been shown to improve mood, help you sleep better, improve memory and creative thinking and promote new thought patterns and helps to connect socially’.

The route for the ride is to commence at Ware Priory in Ware, Hertfordshire, and will include a visit to Dobbs Weir, before returning to Ware to complete the ride. Those who are concerned that 11 miles appears a daunting challenge, will be glad to know that snacks will be provided halfway through the ride, as motivation to complete the challenge!

If you are considering attending the event, then please book in advance by calling 07760615342 or emailing: Jonathan.clack@rethink.org.
