Without breaking the bank

The summer holidays are rapidly approaching signalling seemingly endless hours in which our kids need to be entertained, educated and engaged. Panic! This is sure to be expensive right? Wrong! The most important thing you can give your children is your time and attention. There are plenty of ways you can have fun with your kids without spending a fortune. Read on for 10 ideas of ways to entertain your kids.

  • Go to the Library
  • Books are magical doorways to mystical lands and allow you and your children to travel anywhere – for free! Many local libraries also run story time groups, quiz nights and other activities to entertain children of all ages. Enquire at your local library to find out what’s going on.
  • Get drawing
  • The bigger the canvas the more fun it seems to be for children. Take a set of chalks outside and challenge them to draw the scariest monster they can think of or (if you dare) a portrait of you! There is something which seems a little ‘naughty’ about drawing on the floor, adding a level of appeal for all children.
  • Games
  • Don’t forget the old-fashioned board games. They’re classics for a reason. If the weather seems miserable, draw the curtains, choose and game and settle in for an afternoon of competition.
  • Picnic Time
  • Choose a local park or even in your back garden and prepare a picnic to enjoy together. Involve your children in all aspects, from buying the ingredients, making the food to packing it ready to go.
  • Dance Party
  • Let your children dictate the playlists and have a living room disco – your kids may need to be young for this one or it’ll be far too embarrassing seeing you dance!
  • Night Walk
  • Even the tamest of neighbourhoods can seem to come alive at night in the imagination of children. Grab your coats and torches and explore the local area. Look out for nocturnal wildlife.
  • Plant a Garden
  • Pick up a few cheap seeds (supermarkets often give these away to children as part of special promotions) and teach your children the art of patience as they eagerly await their produce to grow!
  • Film Night
  • Choose some snacks, bring the duvets downstairs and snuggle up watching a film of their choice.
  • Hike
  • Explore a local woods or nearby nature reserve you haven’t been to before. Don your hiking boots and enjoy exploring the trails.
  • Have a Bonfire
  • There is something magical about a campfire. Throw in some toasted marshmallows and your children will be talking about it for weeks to come.

Having fun doesn’t have to cost a fortune, so, spend your time wisely this summer and create memories to last a lifetime.
